Tabanan Regency




    Tabanan Regency
The Tabanan regency is located in a region formed by a low plateau and mountains, in which the mountain of Batu Karu (height 237 m from sea level) towers high in the air like a cushion on the north, while on the south, a low plateau with spacious rice fields spreading to the sea shore. Her people gather natural salt while the sea brings forth fish. Most of the inhabitants are peasants, growing rice, cash crops, copra and coffee and breeding pigs and cows.

Tabanan is the capital of the Tabanan Regency, with Government activities, schools and a busy market only 21 km from Denpasar. Around the town there are old historic buildings like: temple and castles. Kota Tabanan is the birth place of the great natural artist named Maryo, and his pupils are at present spread over the whole region, among others: I Gusti Ngr Raka (50 years), from Penebel and Kerambitan respectively.

  1. Pura Luhur Batukaru


This temple is 23 km from Kota Tabanan, located in the mountain village of Wongayo. It is the biggest pura of Tabanan Regency, including pura Sadkahyangan. It has some waterspouts with clear water, located in a garden abit to the left outside the pura which is surrounded by big trees. When the “Piodalan” ceremony is held (once in 7 month son Manis-Galungan day), there is big crowd from other regions. The pura is located in the middle of the forest and can be reached by walking for about 1.500 m along paths with pleasant and interesting views plus a lot of fresh sir. (The Manis Galungan ceremony is held on Thursday Umanis uku Galungan)


  1. Pura Tanah Lot


The famous Tanah Lot temple is 15 km from kota Tabanan (35 km from Denpesar); situated o a small rocky island, separated from the coast of Kediri. The view is an impressive blend of the steep cliff and the Tanah Lot temple. During ceremonies (Saturday uku kuningan) the atmosphere is cheerful with the offerings and beautiful Balinese adat dresses glistening and sparkling in the rays of the setting sun.

  1. Bedugul and the Lake of Beratan.


Badugul is a village, located on a mountain, 21 km from Tabanan or 29 km from Denpasar. A lake (of about 375.6 Ha) is located in the middle, surrounded by mountains and large tree forests. It is palace for recreation, very crowded on holidays. The air is fresh and cool and people cruise o the lake with its cool and still water. Some bungalows and bars are found on the shore of the lake which is 1.240 m above sea level.


  1. Blayu and Marga village


Located 13 km from kota Tabanan (30 km from Denpasara). These villages give you a very authentic picture of old rural Bali. In Blayu village there is a weaving home-industry, (kain songket or embroideries and dusters) as well as painting and sculpturing. It is a village which strictly adheres to its adat and ancient ways. If there is, for instance, a religious adat ceremony, like “piodalan” at the puras, the atmosphere is very cheerful with the long procession of offerings and the complete Balinese adat dresses in various colours which you often meet throughout this region. Near the village of Blayu is the village of marga, which has a heroic historic. On the 20th of November 1946 a furious battle raged between the Dutch colonial troops and the Indonesia freedom fighters. Eventually all freedom fighters died as they thought to the lest-man this battle lives forth under the name “PUPUTAN MARGARANA”. Afterwards a temple for Heroes was erected here to commemorate this historic event. The temple was called candi Pahlawan Margaranan. Ngurah Rai was the commander who died together with his troops, during the battle. Candi Pahlawan Margaranan is a temple with a characteristic Balinese style and decoration, towering high (47m) amidst the flat rice fields. The legong and cak dance are often performed in this village.


  1. Kerambitan


Kerambitan is a village located west of Tabanan and 28 km from Denpasar, a village with the genuine structure and rural nature and in its surroundings as temples, castles and a keeping place of an antique gong. Various dance and sculptural arts are found throughout the village.


  1. Puri Anyar Kerambitan


Puri Anyar Kerambitan is a castle which has the structure of a puri antique buildings and surrounding rural nature. Certain attractions are performed upon request. When there is a full moon, a holy time for Hindu Balinese who then present various dances and choruses, among other a dance which is only found in this region called “Toktokan” Toktokan depicts the story of Calonarang which is well known among the Balinese and Javanese. Toktokan is a magic-religious choir to chase away evil spirit and disturbers of the village, while the drama of Colonarang is considered to disperse the evil spirit. The guest can also enjoy Balinese food which is offered in Balinese adat style in the middle of the puri so that the whole festivity during the process of the adat ceremony, with all the Balinese ornaments and decorations.


  1. The beach of Klating


A flat beach with big waves, 10 km from kota tabanan (31 km from Denpasar). Beautiful scenery due to a rock protruding people makes natural salt.


  1. The beach of Yeh Gangga


This is a flat beach with some rock formations sparsely scattered and giving an interesting view, also a place for making natural salt, while the fishermen sail in the Indonesian Ocean with their tiny boats looking for fish.


  1. Yeh Panas


Yeh Panas is located 14 km north of the town of Tabanan. Yeh Panas is a hot water spring containing sulfur. The warm water is channeled trough a sprout as a bathing place for the inhabitants, while is surroundings some bungalows are starting to be built. A big stony river flows past the steep slopes. The terraced rice-fields give nature an interesting and pleasant view.


  1. Jati Luwih


Jati Luwih is a village located on a high plateau in the mountains, 20 km from kota Tabanan. The pura of the village was built at the highest place of said village where you can sit and enjoy the beautiful scenery. The southern part of Bali spreads before you until the sea with its white waves and the blue sea. The fresh and pleasant air will make you want to stay in this region. True is its name: Jati (really) - Luwih (beautiful), Jati Luwih is a really beautiful region.
