SINGARAJA

SINGARAJA
Singaraja was the capital of the province of the Lesser Sunda Island before Bali is formed a separate province the town is quiet, not too crowded and interesting for tourists. It would be a pity if it should not be visited by the tourists. It would be a pity if it should no be visited by the tourists because north Bali has a beautiful mountain with a golf course of 18 holes, can easily take a run down to the beach for a fresh water streaming into the sea. 82 km from Singaraja in the direction of Gilimanuk at a small hill, there is a grave of Jaya Prana. Before 1970 there was only a small and very tiring road to the grave but now this is no more the case. The permanent grave, which walled in and has a tiled roof near Candi Bentar is much visited by domestic tourists. The view of Pulau Menjangan (Deer Island). This island is indeed a reservation of deer’s that becoming scare in Indonesia. The people of Kalianget and even a major part of the North Bali believe in the history of Jaya Prana. The temple of Jaya Prana is worshiped by the local people who maintain a rice mortar and a garden for bathing which belong to Jaya Prana. The history of Jaya Prana became popular when a composer from buleleng who pitra as pseudonym wrote it in the form of Pupuh Ginada. The ngaben ceremony which took place in 1975 was very joyous and until this moment the story of Jaya Prana is performed either in gong drama or lakon arja. A guard from the temple of Jaya Prana in Kalianget stated to me that the origin of Jaya Prana was never known. He was left for dead by his parents and rendered himself to the ruling king, in what is now the village of kalianget. The king loved to shelter neglected children. Was a very pious king. Among the adopted children was agirl named Mentri who was a friend of Jaya Prana. They came to love each other; their relation did not last long though they loved each other, due the some misinformation. At that time the king asked Mentri whether she really loved Jaya Prana but Mentri considered the questions as “selo pulo” and replied no. When she knew this Jaya Prana went over to another girl, namely Layon Sari who also loved him. Mentri was startled when she confronted with the fact hat Jaya Prana married Layon sari, although they had loved each other before. Due to this misinformation at the boundary of Kalianget Banjar, at a river, Mentri cursed that marriage between Jaya Prana Layon Sari would not last long. On that river we now find pura jaran Guyang as place for worship. Later the king became attracted by Layon Sari. He made a plan to kill Jaya Prana and Layon Sari could be made his concubine. Jaya Prana was sent, to Terima Bay as there was insurrection by the Baji people. Meanwhile Patih (governor) Sawunggaling was entrusted a letter by the king which could be opened at Terima Bay. Upon arrival at Terima Bay it turned out that there was no rebellion of Bajo people and after the letter was read by Patij Sawunggaling and the contents disclosed his escort of 40 men were startled to learn that it was an order to kill Jaya Prana. Sawunggaling held Jaya Prana and slowly stabbed his stomach while weeping. The fault of Jaya Prana was to have a beautiful wife who pleased the king. But Jaya Prana has done him well by rearing him from his childhood. Upon return from Terima Bay, Patih Sawunggaling could not answer the enquiries of Lsyon Sari concerning Jaya Prana. Layon Sari refused to marry the king and committed suicide. The king eventually of arya Murka and Sawunggaling. The whole kingdom was destroyed.
