THE HISTOSRY OF GARUT REGENCY IN BRIEF

Once upon time in the year of 1883 Linbangan’s people were instructed to seek a site which would be appointed the capital City of Limbangan. They found a fertile region surrounded by mountains where there was a spring of a pond covered by brushwood. Many people were in plain while cutting open the brush, because of being scratched by Perdu plants. From that case the name of Garut was appeared since then it wan immortalized to become the name of capital city of Limbangan at Galuh Pakuan which is at present Pesir Huut. Gradually the name of regency also changed to become “Garut Regency” at the time of the transfer of the capital city from Galuh Pakuan to Garut, the first regent was R. A. A. ADIWIJAYA, the son of Adipati Kusumawijaya (Pangeran Kornel)
who is recognized as Dalem Cipeunjeuh. The time oint of garut erection was march 17th, 1883 in coincidence with the event of the transfer of governmental centre form Galuh Pakuan (the capital of Limbangan) to Garut. Garut regency has a symbol which depicts nature and soul of Garut, with the motto “Tats Tengtrem Kerta Raharja.” (Peaceful and prosperous)
The position and situation of the regions Garut is one of the regencies in the Southern West Java with the area of 306,519 hectares or 3,006.88 square kilometers. Geographically it lies between 657’34”-744’57” latitude and 10724’34-1087’34” longitude. The borders of the regions:


  • Northern side : Sumedang regency




  • Western side : Cianjur and Bandung regencies




  • Eastern side : Tasikmalaya regency




  • Southern side : Indonesian acean


Administratively, Garut regency consists of 9 districts, 31 sub districts, 8 kamantren, and 404 rural districts.
